There has been a lot in the media recently about beauty and the ways in which hurtful comments affect us, so I though it would be best to talk about these issues.
We all have different interpretations of the word "beautiful" and, quite rightly so, these opinions are allowed to be stated. However, often the opinions that are acknowledged more are the negative ones. If you post a photo of yourself and someone comments on it saying how stunning you look, you will be really chuffed about it. Alternatively though, if someone comments on it and says how disgusting and trampy you look, admittedly you are more likely to let that comment bother you. In today's society beauty tends to be perceived from slim angles. It isn't news to us that the models in fashion magazines are stick thin, yet what we don't consider is that the photos we see are the ones that have been edited and photo shopped, so in actual fact what we are seeing isn't the truth. Things like this cause a lot of us to become narrow minded about what it means to be "beautiful". What about having a great personality? Or an awesome dress sense? We easily forget about the things that make us who we are and instead of focussing on creating our own definitions of beauty, we fall in line to what magazines and the "popular people" paint as an image.
Looks aren't everything and nor should they be. We all perceive beauty in different ways and that is apparent through the media. On many occasions, I scroll through my news feed on Facebook and links on dieting pop up or one of my friend's has shared something about the correct weight you must be in order to be beautiful. I think it's terrible how often these links are clicked on and how often these opinions are shared. People come in a variety of shapes and sizes so it seems incredibly unrealistic to feel that one size deserves to be called "beautiful". If we all looked the same, the world would be such a boring place. Individuality is exciting and having similar or different imperfections as those around you is equally exciting because they make you who you are.
Many questions ponder our brains on a daily basis: Is my hair too short? Does my bum look big in this? No make up or make up? The only reason we feel the need to dwell on the way we look is because of the picture that the media paints. No one is perfect but everyone is beautiful in their own way. I have plenty of friends who vary in size, who vary in intelligence, who vary in the amount of make up they wear and so on. Regardless of their state (make up, no make up etc.), I accept them for who they are because no matter what they look like, they are beautiful people inside and out. I know plenty of people who would agree with this, so if we can, why can't the rest of society?
