Lending a hand

In todays society I feel that it's a rarity for people to make polite or kind gestures for strangers. A good example of this is bus journeys. Recently, having needed to get the bus to and from college on a regular basis I have noticed how impolite some people can be.
As we all know, there are designated seats on the bus specifically for the elderly, the disabled and Mothers with young children or women who are pregnant, but what strikes me is that if a young person or adult is sitting in one of those designated seats and a person from one of the above groups gets on the bus, they don't even move. More importantly, this happens when the buses get really busy. In that kind of situation, it's quite necessary for a member of the elderly or someone with a disability to sit down and it doesn't take much for someone who is perfectly capable of standing to get up and let them.
On my bus journey home yesterday when I was nearing my stop, the bus was fairly quiet. The bus had stopped and a woman was walking down the stairs and she fell and looked like she really hurt herself. I was sitting at the back of the bus downstairs and hadn't noticed she had fallen until an elderly man who was sitting next to the steps pushed his walking frame to one side, slowly stood up and helped her to her feet. Had I noticed, I would of helped her, however, what really got me was that there were other people on the bus who saw the incident and yet it took a man who could barely walk without aid to help this woman. The man sat back down and acted as though he did it on a regular basis and it really wasn't a big deal, but I think it was.
The fact that it takes those who are somewhat less capable to help others when help is needed really says a lot about our society. Had that man not been there, I don't think this woman would have received help and I think that's even worse.
I commend the elderly man who helped the woman because I'm pretty sure she genuinely hurt herself.
Lending a hand and helping someone out doesn't take much.
