Lockdown is really starting to suck now and I think I can say that for everyone. We're all missing family, friends, partners, working and normal life!
Everything has felt negative of late because of this situation and the list could go on with all of the things it has spoilt, but I think it's so important to try and stay positive in a time like this, so I want to share the positives that have come from this situation, along with the things I am grateful for.
Here are my lockdown positives (in no particular order):
- The way everyone has united to protect and support our NHS, care workers and other key workers has been absolutely incredible! Clapping to show our support every Thursday at 8pm is so emotional and I hope that this amount of generosity, love and kindness continues when all of this is over. My old place of work, St Brelades and The Cumberland care homes in Herne Bay stbreladescarehomes.org.uk have had a select group of staff living in the homes since this lockdown was put in place, ensuring the protection and safety of the residents. Whenever I see anything posted online about this, it make me feel so very proud to have worked there. The staff that have moved away from their homes and loved ones to put the beautiful residents first are wonderful and I honestly can't commend them enough!
- I've been able to spend more time than I usually would when I'm home from Uni physically at home. Seeing friends, family, working and going to various places usually keeps me away from home, so it's nice to stay in one place for a bit (or a while)!
- Video chatting! Getting to see my friends, family and boyfriend through a screen, although frustrating, is something I am grateful for.
- I've been doing a lot of baking. I wouldn't call myself a baker, but I do like being in the kitchen and it's been nice making some sweet treats for the family to enjoy.
- Since starting my degree, almost three years ago I haven't read a single book for pleasure. Being an English student, the reading lists are long and a lot of my time has been taken up wading through them. I've loved getting my head stuck in a few books with no intention of analysing them from beginning to end!
- Writing is of course something I've kept up because of my degree and although I write for myself when it comes to my creative assignments, I haven't written anything without it having to be graded in a really long time. It's been nice getting my teeth sunk into some creative projects - keep your eyes peeled!
- A couple of days ago I ordered a beautiful 2-piece 90's suit! It's from a vintage shop I came across while scouring through a virtual vintage fair the lovely Georgie @peony_vintage has set up with a fellow vintage shop owner. I cannot wait for it to arrive and it's something that's really lifted my spirits this week! If you're wanting to check out their amazing concept, go and take a look at their Instagram page @avirtualvintagemarket
- Since being in lockdown I've been able to run so much more than I usually do because I've had more time. I've been able to regularly run longer distances which has been great. My mum and I were supposed to run the Vitality 10k in London at the end of May, but now it's been postponed until later on in the year. I thought I might as well keep up the training!
- Focusing on myself has been odd, but nice. Generally, I'm someone who struggles to relax and after the first three weeks of lockdown I found that I was actually struggling to find time for myself because I was filling my days with Uni work and other bits and pieces that needed to be done. Typical me really, I'm put in lockdown and can't leave my house except to exercise and I still run out of time. Everything has become more manageable now though, for the time being at least.
- It only seems right that Disney+ goes on this list. I think most families have been enjoying working their way through the endless content it has available. Nothing can lift any kind of negativity quite like a Disney film!
I hope this list has brought some positivity into a negative situation. If you're finding yourself feeling a bit down and aren't sure what what to do, I strongly suggest making your own list of lockdown positives. I think it will really help to show that although it feels like everything is falling apart, it doesn't have to.
I hope everyone's keeping safe and trying to get through this the best they can.
Love to you all!
Dotty
